This handbook is the first com-plete guide to the herpetofauna of northeast Africa, covering seven countries - Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan. It contains keys, comprehensive descriptions, maps of all species and photographs of virtually all species known from the region, including 114 species of amphibians and more than 460 species of reptiles. It is an essential tool for the study of the Northeast African herpetofauna and a must have for everyone interested in African reptiles and amphibians. Stephen Spawls went to Kenya when he was four and caught his first chameleon at the age of six. East African herpetology is his major interest (and Stephen is one of the most polite and helpful scientists I ever had the pleasure to co-operate with. ANDREAS S. BRAHM). Mohammad Abubakr is an independent researcher on the natural heritage of Sudan and he is the country's leading expert on its herpetofauna, Tomás Mazuch is a Czech herpetologist and the knowledgeable author of the very well-illustrated book Amphibians and Reptiles of Somaliland and Eastern Ethiopia.
